The Castle of Ourém and the main Church

The Castle of Ourém is one of the most innovative military architectural works from the 15th century in Portugal. It was commissioned by the Count of Ourém, the grandson of D. Nuno Álvares Pereira and has a compact structure with modern active defensive systems, including two large pentagonal towers that served as bulwarks and offered greater resistance to bombard shots.

There is a palatial area located behind the towers that served as the Counts’ residence. It has the shape of a tall tower disposed along the width and connected to the bulwarks.

On the top of the hill, slightly set back from the palace and the castle, is the primitive castle of “Abdegas”, the ancient name of this settlement, whose building dates back to the 12th century.
