The Castel of Almourol

In the middle of the Tagus River, the enigmatic Almourol Castle is one of the most emblematic monuments of the Christian Reconquest.

Located on an islet in the middle of the Tagus River, the Castelo de Almourol is one of the most emblematic monuments to be found in Portugal, due to its significance and the surrounding landscape.

Its history recalls the reconquest of the territory during the Middle Ages. When the Christians arrived here in 1129, the castle already existed under the name of Almorolan, and was then included in the lands given to the guardianship of the Templars, under the orders of Gualdim Pais. According to an inscription at the entrance, the reconstruction works date from 1171.
